Eat, Pool, Love

4 Jun

We had a suite with a private pool.

Our balcony. For realz.

There is nothing that can sum up our vacation better.

Two days before we were supposed to fly out I got a call saying that our flight was cancelled. I had the choice of finding a different flight-hotel package, canceling the trip for a full refund, or leaving a day early.

The latter two were not an option. So after a very long conversation with our travel agent, it was down to two options:

Get a small refund and stay at a hotel that seemed iffy at best, or throw in a few extra bucks and get a new flight that left a bit later on Friday, along with a 5 star hotel, with a suite and a private pool.

You only live once, right?

Granted, it put a bit of a bigger strain on our credit limit.

But it was worth every penny.

Two story suite. A living room area and a balcony PRIVATE POOL on the first floor, and a king sized bed and a jacuzzi bath on the second floor. Free wifi. Half board with a special suite-only restaurant that served 5-course dinners every night.

We were in.

Day one: We got to the hotel at 6pm and it was HEAVEN. We were exhausted but took full advantage of the pool. Times email was checked: 0

Day two: Still tired, decided to make it a mostly lounging around day. Pool again, of course. Then in the afternoon a quick excursion to Old Rhodes Town, where I bought an amazing purse and we got to walk around the ruins. Awesome. Times email was checked: 1

Day three: Water park! Best way to spend an anniversary. For reals. We got thoroughly drunk, slightly sunburned, and had a fantastic time. Email check: 1

Drunken water slides!!!!

Day four: We had some plans to go see the valley of the butterflies, but the day seemed overcast, and we heard it wasn’t really butterfly season anyway. Spent all day lounging by the pool. Email check: 2  Found out a colleague, who was about a week ahead of me in her pregnancy had given birth. Sulked for a bit, but not too much.

Day five: We rented a car and accidentally took the scenic route (*cough* we got lost *cough*) to Lindos. I got to drive stick for the first time in five years and realized how much I missed it, with the exception of one dicey moment where I had to reverse and was precariously close to crashing into a wall. We made the VERY long trek up to the acropolis and got some fantastic views to show for it. We capped off the day with the yummiest. Gyros. Ever. And headed back to the hotel.

The Acropolis at Lindos from the entrance.

The top of the Acropolis. 2 century BC, temple of Athena. Gorgeous.

At 6:15 am the next day we headed to the airport.

Lessons learned:

  1. It is absolutely possible to ignore the world for 5 days straight. First time I’ve managed to do that in YEARS. Barely checked email, stayed off the blogs and facebook despite a constant internet connection. wow.
  2. One’s Google reader gets VERY CLOGGED after 5 days.
  3. I didn’t obsess or self-criticize ONCE during the trip. It was a relief.
  4. One thing that didn’t go away: Both Shmerson and I melted each time there was a baby around. We both really want to get this show on the road already. At one point Shmerson confessed to me that even HIS uterus was starting to hurt.
  5. I don’t spend enough time in the sun. 5 days of it now and I have a mad case of heat rash. Ahh well, at least I got some color!
  6. We NEEDED this. Badly. It’s been two years since we’ve gone abroad. The last time was our honeymoon. I am not going to let this much time pass again.
  7. Private pools rock. Seriously.

That was basically it. Fun. Still recovering. I think it’s one of those cases where you need a vacation after your vacation. 🙂

Greetings From Greece

There Will Be Water Slides

25 May

In about an hour, Shmerson and I will be getting on a plane for five days in Rhodes, Greece.

There will be drinking. There will be old Greek ruins. There will be yummy food. There will be a celebration of our two year wedding anniversary on Sunday.

There will be water slides. I insist on that last one.

There will finally be a much needed vacation.

See you all on the flip side!
